OUR ACTIONS

GIF Actions are primarily focused on restoring and protecting keystone species in the Long Island Sound through projects primarily involving oysters, eelgrass, and living shorelines.

Oyster Actions

Collected and treated 100+ pounds of oyster shell from local restaurants throughout Southeastern CT
Identified natural, historic oyster beds in the Connecticut River as sites for oyster bed restoration
Collaborated with regional non-profits and state partners to formulate long-term restoration plans and objectives

Eelgrass Actions

Contributed to scholarly research and education of eelgrass through the funding and dispersal of academic grants
Developed a project proposal for eelgrass restoration throughout the Long Island Sound using regional and international best practices
Identified local and regional partners for additional project development

OUTREACH AND EDUCATION

One of GIF's Principal Purposes is to educate our local community on the ecological benefits of oysters and eelgrass.
